ISLAND OF SAN GIULIO

The island of San Giulio can be reached by ferry departing from the main square in front of the Hotel. The island is a special quiet place devoted to spirituality. It is possible to visit the Romanic Church, in which are located very particular art pieces such as the Ambone, the pulpit made in serpentine from Oira, the recently restored frescoes and the crypt with the remains of San Giulio, who according to the legend freed the lake from the dragons.

SACRO MONTE

At the Sacro Monte, built in 1590, taking a stroll along the ancient foot path. Starting from the main square to slowly reach the peaceful and breathtaking top of the hill where there are 20 chapels, part of the UNESCO world's cultural heritage, dedicated to the life of Saint Frances. There are also further Protected Natural Parks/Areas in the proximities such as Monte Mesma's convent and the Buccione's tower, dating middle 12th century and 23 meters high..

I VICOLI

Ancient carved stones full of symbols and signs are to be discovered throughout town as in a treasure hunt game. Buildings tell their stories through their architecture as for instance in the main square Piazza Motta there is the Palazzotto della Comunità della Riviera di San Giulio tracing back to 1582, then the main catholic church of Assunta, as well as few aristocratic houses which reflects the past. There is also a shuttle train service (on wheels) from the main square Piazza Motta, to the nearby area of Legro, from 1998 defined as painted town with murals reproducing stills from films that have been made in the area. It is also quite possible to encounter famous actors and actresses that are either staying at one of the fabulous Suites of the Hotel Leon d'Oro or even dining on the terrace facing the island, so close by almost as if one can touch it. From Legro there is a beautiful walk, through a footpath in the woods leading towards Corconio, a baroque's gem town, with Saint Stefan's church and the 16th and 17th century's villas.

WESTSIDE

On the Westside of the lake there small towns such as Miasino with its Villa Nigra the main Church dominating the town, Ameno with the Bocciola's Sanctuary and the Renaissance Museum, Vacciago with the Fondazione Claderara an incredibile art collection open to the public, Armeno with the fine Romanic Church of Assunta …On the East side of the lake, there is Pella with San Filiberto's complex, Boleto with the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso dominating the lake, San Maurizio d'Opaglio, home to taps' industries, and the small church of Madonna di Luzzara.

VALLE STRONA

Valle Strona is home to the world's most famous puppet: Pinocchio. This is where the wood is crafted and Pinocchio is born. This valley is a place for all seasons among remote villages where time seems to have stopped in the past. From the bottom of the valley until Campello Monti, further south the Walser town, open only during summer, looking for art, history and enogastronomy.

ISOLANDS AND VALLEYS

It only takes few kilometres to reach beautiful places such as the Lake Maggiore where the magic continues, here you can visit the three islands Isole Borromee with their artistic and botanical treasures, there is also Stresa and Baveno. You can even reach the region of Ossola with its incredibile valleys: Val Formazza with the Toce waterfall, Val Divedro which leads to the historical border passing of Sempione, Val Anzasca with Macugnaga and the Monte Rosa, Valle Antrona, the fantastic Natural Mountain Park of Alpe Devero.
